Skateistan: Empowering Youth Through Skateboarding and Education / Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Cambodia, where more than half the population is under 25, is one of the poorest countries in Asia. The non-profit organisation Skateistan is committed to building children’s confidence and sense of community through sport and arts-based activities. The programmes for young people aged 5 to 17 aim to broaden educational and sports opportunities, particularly for girls, children with disabilities and those from low-income backgrounds in the surrounding areas.
Children learn important life skills such as teamwork, how to make friends and take turns. This means they build their own confidence, but they also help others to develop theirs by encouraging them to take on new challenges.
One of Skateistan’s programmes, Skate and Create, offers weekly skateboard training alongside an arts-based educational programme. In the classroom, teachers use the creative arts to teach a variety of subjects, including human rights, nutrition and the environment. The aim is to give young people the tools to express themselves, think critically and develop their confidence. The skate park serves as an invaluable platform for the children to express themselves, develop their potential and forge friendships that transcend social barriers.
